FAMILIES FIRST BEDFORDSHIRE AND PROJECT 229 RECEIVES FUNDING TO CONTINUE DELIVERING VITAL SERVICES TOCHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE AFFECTED BY DOMESTIC ABUSE IN BEDFORD
Families First Bedfordshire (FfB) in partnership with Project 229 (P229) has been awarded a grant from The Harpur Trust to continue delivering its youth programme, SPACE, for children and young people affected by domestic abuse for the next three years. SPACE was founded and established in the summer of 2016 by a unique partnership between FfB, P229 and the Early Help team at Bedford Borough Council. FfB’s specialism in supporting victims and young people affected by domestic abuse tied with P229’s expertise in community development created a strong platform to get SPACE up and running. Thanks to start-up funding from Bedfordshire Public Health, SPACE has been running a fortnightly group for the last year. The Trust has donated £143,138 for the next three years to enable the programme to continue whilst providing the opportunity to develop a ‘healthy relationships’ project into all schools and academies across the Borough.
The core SPACE offer is a fortnightly group, ran in the evenings for children and young people affected by domestic abuse. Participants can attend, meet other children impacted by domestic abuse, have opportunities to talk about their experiences and have fun in a safe environment. In addition, this funding will enable us to recruit a Youth Worker who will deliver a range of services including a Borough wide assembly programme on healthy relationships and a number of small group/one to one sessions which will reach nearly 800 children per year.
Michael Howe, Chief Executive at FfB said, “Without this vital donation from The Trust SPACE was at significant risk of being stopped. This funding will allow us to continue to support children and young peoiple at an extremely difficult time through a new and innovative programme.”
